We are back and refreshed from our recent, very successful quilt show! Many thanks to all the Cascade members who helped out, as well as to members of neighbor guild, KISS, for its success. Take a look at the photos of some of our entries at the Quilt Show link. Our next show will be in 2013, so take a quick break and start quilting again!

For our October meeting, we will be taking a field trip to Polka Dot Pincushion. Because the shop closes at 8 PM, we will start our meeting at 6 PM at the shop. There will be mini product demos, shopping, and our meeting. We will be meeting on Thursday, October 27.

Also in October, we will be having a “Sewcial.” At our sewcials, we bring whatever projects we are working on and spend time with our quilting friends. It is a great opportunity to concentrate– and chat– about quilting. There will be large tables for sewing or cutting, and a few irons and ironing stations.

Since we have some members new to sewing, we plan to have a tutorial around 11 AM. New members need name tags, and we can demo how to measure and cut using current methods. We do have tentative plans for additional easy quick projects to teach techniques for half square triangles and more. We will be meeting at the Northwest Akron branch Library on Saturday, October 22 for the Sewcial. You can come any time that day, starting when the library opens at 10 AM to 4 PM. See you there.

August and September 2011

The Guild is meeting on Thursday, August 18 at 7 PM, but this month, we are devoting our time to some final show-related stuff- dropping off goodies for the show, helping package items to sell and making others. Be sure to come– we will have tasty treats for you!

There will be no meeting in September, since we will all be “meeting” at the Show! See you there!

Summer at Cascade

We will start preparing for the September Quilt Show at our June meeting with a fun make-it program. July is our Annual Membership Get Together. This year we will be at Spaghetti Warehouse in downtown Akron, on July 21 at 6 PM. We are happy to see new members, so plan to come. August will feature a Members-only workshop!

Raffle Quilt

Every year, Cascade has a raffle quilt for a fund raiser. Part of the funds help with the activities of the Guild, and part of the proceeds are donated to a local charity. This year, our member Debbie Shives, has donated a gorgeous hand applique quilt, called Times Remembered, from a pattern by Pat Sloan. Members will be selling raffle tickets for $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, contact the website. Tickets will also be available at the Quilt Show in September.

April Meeting

This month’s program is the postponed Hand Applique program. No snow this time! Bring questions, watch the techniques, get the handout, start your own practice block. For the hands-on preparation look at the 2 handout links below. If you are sewing, come at 6:30 to start, so we will have plenty of time to prep. The meeting will start at 7 PM, as usual.

Cascade has a quilt show coming up in September. Our award-winning Ruthann will be showing us some of her tips, tricks, and techniques for award-winning quilts. Several prize winning quilts from board members will be shown as examples. Also, Janice is going to share what our longarm quilter wishes we would have done to our tops before bringing them to be quilted. Join us February 17; the meeting starts at 7 pm, but you can come socialize any time from 6:30 on.

The January applique program that was cancelled due to weather has been rescheduled to the May 19 meeting.

Our December meeting time is changed for our annual Christmas party, to Thursday, December 9. It starts at 6:30 pm, but you can come as early as 6 pm to bring your stuff and set up.

The Guild will provide the main course. If your last name begins with letters A-L, bring appetizers. If your last name begins with letters M-Z, bring dessert. We will have games [including Right, Center, Left, so bring your 2.5" strips to wager], food, and laughs. We will also be sharing the challenge UFO’s [unfinished objects]. It is drawing time for the raffle quilt as well.

Visitors are welcome!

January (2011) meeting

Back to our regular third Thursday of the month meeting time [January 20] at 7 pm at the Church. Program for this month, for beginners and frustrated appliquers, is tips and tricks for hand applique, with our own Judy. She is creating a simple pattern for us and preparation instructions will appear on the web page after the holidays [or when she gets her act together-- whichever comes first!]. See you then!

October and November meetings

Join us for our October meeting on Thursday, the 21st, at 7 pm. We are welcoming Peg Bingham as she speaks to us about the history of machine quilting in America– snippets from her Masters’ thesis.

In November, our meeting night changes to Friday, November 19 for a lecture from quilter Rita Fishel, owner of the Creations SewClever Quilt Shop in Chillcothe. Non-Cascade visitors are welcome at the lecture for a nominal $5.00 entry.

August Meeting – Road trip!

Heads up! The August 19th (2010) meeting will be held away from our usual site. Instead we’ll be heading out to the Little Red Quilt House in Medina, Ohio. We’ll see you there at 6:30 PM for social time followed by the meeting at 7 PM with a surprise program and shopping. Woohoo! See their website for directions and info about the shop.
