What a wonderful Christmas party we had! The food was great, the railroad car was charming, and the company was the best! Check out our webpage for pix from the event and our quilt show ‘n tell.

With the new year, we start our monthly programs with a binding how-to. There are various ways to do your binding, and we all want to make it the best way possible. Several of our binding expert members will be at stations to demo how to do it. There are also several methods of non-binding to share. Yes, there is an alternative! So be sure to join us.

We will also be presenting the wrap up of the Quilt Show and the information Joanna, Jacki and I gathered for the next show. Lots of decisions need to be made and we want your input, so be sure to come.

The meeting is January 19 at the Church. We start at 7 PM, but come early for meeting and greeting!

Also in January, Peg Bingham will be presenting a free-to-members workshop on the Attic Windows pattern she developed. This one is tricky because of the Y seam, and Peg has it all figured out so it is easy to do. Instructions and times will be forthcoming. Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 21 at the Highland Square Branch Library in Akron. Remember, members only!

November and December 2011 Meetings

Our next meeting [November 17] is back at the church at our usual time– 7 PM, with time beforehand for visiting. Our guest speaker this month will be quilt teacher Mary Huey. She is going to teach us how to adapt and change patterns. If you have some blocks or patterns you want to change somehow– maybe you want to size them larger or smaller or make them on point, or whatever, go ahead and bring several with you. Should be a very interesting program. When it comes to math, I want to go in the closet and hide, so I am hoping this helps me!

Our December Christmas party will be December 6 at the Erie Station Grill in Tallmadge. To get there, head to Tallmadge Circle and exit at East Avenue. It is less than a half mile down the street on the right. You will see the railway car where we will be having our own private dinner. [That way, we can make as much noise as we want to!] You will have limited menu items to select from and they will do separate checks for us. Here is a link to their website. It should be a fun time.

Visitors are welcome. You may visit our meetings twice before deciding to become a member.

October Meeting, 2011

We are back and refreshed from our recent, very successful quilt show! Many thanks to all the Cascade members who helped out, as well as to members of neighbor guild, KISS, for its success. Take a look at the photos of some of our entries at the Quilt Show link. Our next show will be in 2013, so take a quick break and start quilting again!

For our October meeting, we will be taking a field trip to Polka Dot Pincushion. Because the shop closes at 8 PM, we will start our meeting at 6 PM at the shop. There will be mini product demos, shopping, and our meeting. We will be meeting on Thursday, October 27.

Also in October, we will be having a “Sewcial.” At our sewcials, we bring whatever projects we are working on and spend time with our quilting friends. It is a great opportunity to concentrate– and chat– about quilting. There will be large tables for sewing or cutting, and a few irons and ironing stations.

Since we have some members new to sewing, we plan to have a tutorial around 11 AM. New members need name tags, and we can demo how to measure and cut using current methods. We do have tentative plans for additional easy quick projects to teach techniques for half square triangles and more. We will be meeting at the Northwest Akron branch Library on Saturday, October 22 for the Sewcial. You can come any time that day, starting when the library opens at 10 AM to 4 PM. See you there.

August and September 2011

The Guild is meeting on Thursday, August 18 at 7 PM, but this month, we are devoting our time to some final show-related stuff- dropping off goodies for the show, helping package items to sell and making others. Be sure to come– we will have tasty treats for you!

There will be no meeting in September, since we will all be “meeting” at the Show! See you there!

Quilt show!

It is almost time for our quilt show! We hope you have been creating some fabulous quilts to enter. Click here for the registration form. Feel free to download it to print or click on the link to the quilt show on the right hand side of this webpage.

The show, Basket of Quilts XIV, will be on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 10 am – 5 pm and Sunday, September 18th, 2011 12 pm – 5 pm at the Bath United Church of Christ, 3980 West Bath Road in Bath,Ohio.

We will have six vendors: Polka Dot Pincushion Quilt Shop [Richfield], Angelics Quilt Shop[Canton], Mary Huey, quilt making teacher and instructor; Nana’s Needlework [Aurora], Little Red Quilt House [Medina], and basket lady, Betty Merryweather.

Take a chance on our raffle baskets, loaded with goodies, and our raffle quilt. The Akron Canton Regional Foodbank will receive part of the raffle quilt proceeds.

And for the thrifty among you, check out Grandma’s Attic for new and gently used fabrics, quilting supplies, books and patterns, and more.

Summer at Cascade

We will start preparing for the September Quilt Show at our June meeting with a fun make-it program. July is our Annual Membership Get Together. This year we will be at Spaghetti Warehouse in downtown Akron, on July 21 at 6 PM. We are happy to see new members, so plan to come. August will feature a Members-only workshop!

Raffle Quilt

Every year, Cascade has a raffle quilt for a fund raiser. Part of the funds help with the activities of the Guild, and part of the proceeds are donated to a local charity. This year, our member Debbie Shives, has donated a gorgeous hand applique quilt, called Times Remembered, from a pattern by Pat Sloan. Members will be selling raffle tickets for $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, contact the website. Tickets will also be available at the Quilt Show in September.

April Meeting

This month’s program is the postponed Hand Applique program. No snow this time! Bring questions, watch the techniques, get the handout, start your own practice block. For the hands-on preparation look at the 2 handout links below. If you are sewing, come at 6:30 to start, so we will have plenty of time to prep. The meeting will start at 7 PM, as usual.

Sewcials and such

IT’S TIME TO BE “SEWCIAL!”

Periodically, Cascade has sewing get togethers called Sewcials. Everyone is invited. Bring a project to work on, whether on your machine or hand sewing. No current project? We have some baby quilts you can help make for Children’s Medical Center! Sewcials are great opportunities to get to know other members better, and get some work done. We are sewcializing at the Tallmadge Branch Library on Saturday, March 26. You can come any time between library opening at 10 AM to closing, at 4:45 PM. Stay as long as you like. JOIN US AT OUR UPCOMING WORKSHOP

Cascade is bringing veteran teacher Shirley Stutz in to teach us painless paper piecing, using a no-tear method [also no tears!]. The workshop will be on April 23 and will start at 10 AM, ending around 5 PM. Participants should come early to set up. We will be at the Church, in the same room where we usually meet, on the first floor. Our project will be “Wonder Star.” Member cost is $25; non-member cost is $30. Please contact Judy at 330.630.0494 before April 1 if you want to attend. There will also be a lunch available for an additional $5.00 or you can bring your own lunch.

March 2011 Meeting

Our speaker for this month is Cindy Casciato, author of STASH WITH SPLASH QUILTS. She will teach a new tool/technique to save cutting time, the “magic triangle” technique; no waste flying geese technique; and 3-D applique. All this and tips on organizing our stashes! Join us for the program on March 17 at 7 PM, or come any time from 6:30 PM on, to socialize.

March is also our Founder’s Day Celebration– do I see cake in our future?

February 2011 Meeting

Cascade has a quilt show coming up in September. Our award-winning Ruthann will be showing us some of her tips, tricks, and techniques for award-winning quilts. Several prize winning quilts from board members will be shown as examples. Also, Janice is going to share what our longarm quilter wishes we would have done to our tops before bringing them to be quilted. Join us February 17; the meeting starts at 7 pm, but you can come socialize any time from 6:30 on.

The January applique program that was cancelled due to weather has been rescheduled to the May 19 meeting.
