Jelly Roll Tote
Got a jelly roll you bought and love the colors but can’t find a pattern you like? Did you participate in a 2 1/2″ strip swap and now don’t know what to with all of them? This tote is for you!

Simple sewing, some decorative stitches and a purchased handle (or make one from fabric) is all it takes. Doreen will show you how easy it is to make and as an added bonus, will demonstrate how to to put a zipper closure in any tote you already own. Come to the meeting to learn all about this great tote, and don’t forget your show and tell!

Mark your calendars for May 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Northwest Akron Library (directions here), and get those unfinished projects ready for sewing at our May sewcial. For those of you unfamiliar with our sewcials, let us suggest you bring an extension cord and a cushion for your chair. Usually someone brings an iron and cutting board, but feel free to bring your own.

There are casual restaurants close to this library if you’d like to eat out. Otherwise, you can bring your lunch.

A Good Time Was Had By All

Cascade’s successful 2013 quilt show has come and gone. We want to thank all our volunteers; our vendors; our raffle ticket purchasers; folks who donated items for raffles, grandma’s attic, and the small quilts auction; and Redeemer Christian School for a great venue. Thanks also to everyone who entered all the wonderful quilts.

For this show we used a different judging system – points based rather than category groupings. The design and workmanship of each quilt entered for judging were assigned points, for a total of 100 possible points. Each quilt was assessed on its own, rather than compared with others. It was the first time we used this approach, and we plan to review whether to continue it in future shows.

We’ll post pictures of the show here over the coming months. For now, enjoy this picture of Carol O’Connor’s quilt, “Spring Garden,” that won the judge’s choice ribbon.

Our April meeting will be presented by own guild member, Doreen Kuster. The program will be “Color-Get Inspiration from Nature and Art.” Come and learn ideas on how to choose and blend your colors for an award winning quilt!

It’s Show Time!

That’s right, next Friday, April 5, our Baskets of Quilts show opens at 10 a.m. at Redeemer Christian School, 2141 Fifth St., Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. You can enjoy the show on April 5 until 7 p.m. and April 6 from 10-4. Admission is $5. We expect more than 85 quilts ranging from traditional to art quilts from Contemporary Cloth Artists of Cleveland and modern quilts from the Akron Modern Quilt Guild.

There will be 6 vendors with goodies to tempt you, and themed raffle baskets. You can take a chance on winning a chocolate basket, breakfast basket, or spa basket, and more. The always popular Grandma’s Attic returns with lots of bargains, and this year light snacks will be available for purchase. New this year is a silent auction of small quilts made by our guild members. Another new feature this year is a vintage sewing machine raffle. One machine is a classic 1947 Singer Featherweight—lightweight, gorgeous, and one of the best machines ever. The other is a full sized Singer 301, another great sewing machine. Both are in full working order. Chances are $1 or 6 for $5, and you choose which machine you want to take a chance on. This Saturday, March 23, is our next sewcial. All are invited to bring their projects, machines, and smiles to the Highland Square Branch Library in Akron. Founders Day Meeting, March 21 Join the Fun!

This month we will have our Founder’s Day celebration. We will be honoring a member who has shown their love of quilting and dedicated their time to support the programs and mission of our guild. Karen Miller and Debbie Shives will be bringing the quilts our guild has made for the Small Quilt Auction that will be on display at our April quilt show. Come and vote for your favorite! Visitors are always welcome!

Win A Vintage Sewing Machine

This year Cascade is raffling off two vintage Singer sewing machines – a 1947 Featherweight 221 and a 301. Both are in full working order and have carrying cases. Machines in this condition sell for several hundred dollars.

Purchase tickets from Cascade members or e-mail us at cascadequiltguild@gmail.com. Tickets are priced at $1 each and 6 for $5. You can specify which machine you’re interested in.
